I have just written an " English National Anthem". I am an unknown poet who has written hundreds of poems in handwriting and am too busy to print/publish. The music is also written and is being orchestrated . it will appear shortly in full on Youtube .Herewith the poem

             English National Anthem
                             by Donald Crosby Giblin

The White Cliffs of Dover the ice age formed
The green meadow pasture this world adorned
A haven for men a creation through ages
Where true honour lies a creation its pages

To the north the high seas form
To the south the atlantic clear storms
Home is central peaceful pastures lie
Our homeland our England, clouds and blue sky

Alba is white the Cliffs of Dover
Englands first name and seagulls hover
This Atlantic where lands end lies
And Hadrian's Wall the last England sky

Peopled by multitudes woaded in blue
Those who stayed with romans it's true
Wattle and daub a home cosy fires
The Engles the Christians- Jesus inspired

Truth is the haven religeons are borne
And humans aspire to their haven warm
To peace and rest true a vigil eternal
To freedom so precious - our England maternal

                Sincerely, Don

And a fine National Anthem Canada has too. I have family over there and happily sing along when I've watched Hockey with them. England needs something as stirring and patriotic as 'Oh Canada!'.

Not so sure about the Scots etc. being arrogant, but England should have it's own Anthem. I am half English and half Welsh,I am also a Royalist (maybe unpopular in certain circles but there you have it). I love GSTQ as an Anthem for the UK, but as has been said before it is not right for England alone. I love the fact that when Wales play sport a Welsh Anthem is played and I would also love to see England run out and sing "I vow to thee my Country", the Full version as well please so include -
I heard my country calling, away across the sea
Across the waste of waters she calls and calls to me
Her sword is girded at her side, her helmet on her head
And around her feet are lying the dying and the dead
I hear the noise of battle, the thunder of her guns
I haste to thee my mother, a son among thy sons -
Sorry to those who feel it is Jingoistic or some such nonsense it is part of the poem and should be included. We did once hear it (the sanitised version)in a Rugby match against Canada played at Wembley... Will Carling had something to do with that if I remember and it went down really well... my view anyway.

The music for God Save The Queen is the same as the national anthem of Liechtenstein, and it doesn't sound like a dirge when they play it. It must only in the UK. Also for the Commonwealth games 'Land of Hope and Glory' is used when ever England win a medal.

I'm English and I was at Hampden that night with a Scottish friend. I knew the Liechtenstein national anthem had the same tune as God save the Queen. I'm a staunch anti-monarchist and had to have a little chuckle to myself at all these Scots getting themselves worked up over a piece of music.

Agreed. I have always thought that Rose Of England is the perfect English anthem. I also like Jerusalem and I Vow To Thee My Country but I think Rose can appeal to a much wider cross-section of English people when it comes to singing a song at a major event.

The arrogant Scots, Irish and Welsh have there own parliaments and anthems but dont want us to have either. We need both and should be an independent country again.

I'm an atheist and have no middle east connections but I recognise Jerusalem is an allegorical poetic expression and if anything is about striving to build heaven on earth and not waiting for mythical afterlife to better yourself.

God Save the Queen must be the dullest and toe curling anthem ever written.
