I seem to remember at the last commonwealth games the full version of Jerusalem was sung for English athletes which was deemed a bit too long,they shortened it to an acceptable length but that didn`t detract it from making you feel pride when the ST Georges Cross was raised so yes it`s Jerusalem for me.

Rather a late comment from me but Canon Gray is a creep, and so obviously so. I admire HM The Queen but for someone like the Canon to come out like this in such transparent and patronising way relects badly on her. It does nothing for the Church either. The Church of England by the way.

The English national anthem GSTQ is not an anthem for England as the words are nowt to do with England the song is sung by all the Queens subjects to reaffirm their subjugation to her as the Queen. As a republican I find the the singing of GSTQ offensive.

Not sure if I’m listening too hard here, but I reckon I can hear ‘gwacious’ Queen’ and ‘ weign over us’ when the hooray Henry’s give full voice to the anthem at rugger internationals! A bit Elmer Fudd-like methinks. must be a Wugby thing.

I believe that england should have it’s on anthem because when we watch the Euro 2012 in Poland this year I will be annoyed because when we sing God Save the Queen we are pretty much singing we are with the church of England and no other religions and that we will die for the Queen.
I am c Catholic i do not support the Queen i Support the Pope

If God Save the Queen is the English anthem, as the FA and RFU insist it is, then Scottish, Welsh and N.Irish gold medal winners will receive their medals hearing the strains of the English anthem.

So, they’ll be British when they lose and English when they win.

Two non-starters for replacing God Save the Queen are the British empire durge ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ and the British ‘There’ll always be an England’ that refers to the red white and blue.

I just hope that no British athlete gets any medal in the Olympics. Any success by Team GB will be an excuse for the British Government and the media, especially the BBC, to shove more phoney Britishness down our throats, but only in England, of course. Lucky old Scotland and Wales don’t have to suffer it. It’s high time the British Olympic Association split into separate associations for the individual nations within the Divided Kingdom, so that we can have separate Olympic teams, just like we do for footie and rugby.

Oh, and GSTQ is just a depressing tuneless dirge.

Totally agree with this. I’ve been told off and sworn at for refusing to stand for GSTQ before an England football match but as I keep pointing out, GSTQ is NOT the English anthem, we use it by default because we don’t have one of our own.
